************************************************************************ IERS Message No. 126 March 03, 2008 ************************************************************************ Position at the Royal Observatory of Belgium Applications are invited for a postdoctoral or master-degree position at the Royal Observatory of Belgium (ROB) in the Section "Time, Earth Rotation, and Space Geodesy". The successful candidate will study the data from GPS and VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry) in order to determine the nutation, i.e. the periodic variations of the Earth orientation in space, and therewith the interior of the Earth. Applicants must preferably have a PhD or experience in geodesy or in a related field of physics or astronomy. Research experience related to GPS or VLBI analysis is an advantage. The position is opened in the framework of a research project for which a budget has been obtained at the Belgian Science Policy (BELSPO) and is available immediately. The initial contract is for one year, with a possibility of prolongation until the end of 2010. The position will stay open until it is filled. Interested candidates should send an application containing CV and list of publications, together with e-mail addresses of one or two contact persons who can provide a recommendation. Applications and/or questions should be sent to: Veronique Dehant (v.dehant@oma.be) and/or Carine Bruyninx (c.bruyninx@oma.be). Summary of the project: Determination and modeling of nutation from VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry) and GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) observations The present Earth nutation model is based on adjustments of geophysical parameters on Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations. In order to improve the model it is thus necessary to improve the parameter determination from observation, which is proposed in this research project by combining VLBI and GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) data. The aim of our proposal is to define a strategy of combination of VLBI and GNSS in order to obtain a better accuracy and a better consistency of the nutation series. Furthermore, the GNSS determination of Earth orientation parameters (in particular the nutations and the length-of-day variations) will be studied, with the objective of improving the precision as well. The geophysical parameters determined from the new nutation series will be re-evaluated and therewith the nutation theory will be improved. ************************************************************************ IERS Messages are edited and distributed by the IERS Central Bureau.
