************************************************************************ IERS Message No. 231 June 17, 2013 ************************************************************************ Job Vacancy at GFZ in Geodetic/Astrometric VLBI The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national Research Centre for Geosciences in Germany and a member of the Helmholtz Association. For the new Working Group "Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI)" at Department 1 "Geodesy and Remote Sensing", Section 1.1 "GPS/Galileo Earth Observation", we invite applications for a Junior Scientist (f/m) in Geodetic/Astrometric VLBI In the VLBI group the research focus lies on the applications of VLBI in space, where topics such as the collocation of various space-geodetic techniques on board of satellites and the connection of dynamical and kinematical celestial reference frames, e.g. through differential VLBI (D-VLBI), play a key role. The VLBI group at GFZ shall operationally provide the results of VLBI data analysis to the International VLBI Service for Geodesy and Astrometry (IVS). Assuming an active role inside IVS, the official IVS troposphere products will be combined and provided at GFZ. The specific tasks are: - Development of scientific methods and the corresponding software for applications of VLBI in differential VLBI (D-VLBI) including the consideration of the radio sources and their apparent proper motions, e.g. caused by intrinsic structure variability - Integration and testing of the developed methods into the existing VLBI data analysis software VieVS - Contributions to the operational activities of the GFZ Analysis Center of the International VLBI Service for Geodesy and Astrometry (IVS) Qualifications: - MSc / Diploma in Geodesy preferably with specialization in space-geodetic techniques or MSc / Diploma in Astronomy / Physics with particular knowledge of the physics of extragalactic radio sources (radio galaxies, quasars, etc.) - Experience with operational analysis of geodetic VLBI observations and software development of VLBI analysis software, e.g. OCCAM, VieVS, Calc/SOLVE, Bernese, and with provision of scientific results to the user community of IVS products - Knowledge about the operational processes within the IVS - Experience with scientific software development, e.g. applying FORTRAN or Matlab - Very good English - Skill to contribute to a multi-disciplinary and international working group with the appropriate communicative competence - High motivation and self-employment capabilities More information: http://www.gfz-potsdam.de/portal/gfz/Neuestes/Stellenanzeigen see: Kennziffer 33_1_13 G Junior Scientist (f/m) in Geodetic/Astrometric VLBI (goto English version in navigation if not displayed automatically) ************************************************************************ IERS Messages are edited and distributed by the IERS Central Bureau.
